STONEWORKS panels are not sealed in the factory, however we do recommend that a sealer be field applied to help ensure the long-term performance of the product. There are many sealers on the market and they play an important role in the outcome of the floor. The cost of sealers varies widely, and depending on the chemical makeup of the sealer it will likely affect the STONEWORKS panel’s color, gloss, slip and stain resistance, and overall wearability as well as influence the various maintenance schedules and protocols. Whether the product is used in high traffic walkways & corridors or breakrooms & food/drink prep areas will affect the sealer choice. Therefore, it is important that sealers are evaluated against the application’s specific requirements and specified by the design team in the project specifications.
STONEWORKS panels are cement-based products and are compatible with sealers formulated for concrete or natural stones. The only precaution when evaluating sealers is that much of the information pertains to concrete sealers applied on slabs and not raised floor panels. Viscous sealers tend to fill in the seams of the panels and adversely affect the accessibility of the system. Also, sealers that have a neutral pH and can be applied by spray misting vs. flooding the floor should be considered as both strong chemicals and excess flooding can have a negative impact on the floor.

For any sealer selected, a suitably sized mock-up of STONEWORKS panels should be constructed with the specified sealer applied and reviewed by all parties to ensure desired results prior to application on the installed floor system.
